Coke Studio @ MTV

Like everyone else even I was waiting for CokeStudio India. Must admit that it has got nothing to do with my love of Music, Coke or MTV. Like most other things in life, it was all about herd instinct.

For about a month or so, my Twitter timeline is abuzz with mentions of CokeStudio Pakistan. Frankly speaking, as far as music is concerned, everybody is a big fan of Pakistan. You got it wrong, it's less to do with Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan but more to do with www.songs.Pk, one stop shop for music.

Some say it’s a real game changer for MTV, it'll put Music back to MTV blah blah. But, I am sure that after producing shows like Roadies & SplitsVilla, MTV doesn’t give a damn to M.

Finally when the day arrived (launching of CokeStudio), it took me almost half a minute to find MTV Channel on my TV; last I remember switching on MTV when Cyrus Broacha was young and Cyrus Sahukar wasn’t even born. At last, I was watching Shaan on the CokeStudio and was glad that like everything else we’ll bollywoodise this also.

But, all that begun well didn’t end well for me, this is not what we expect from a music programme, do we…?

Where the hell were judges in this – talented Himesh, Anu Malik, Farah Khan, not even Archana Puran Singh. Now how would I know whether Chinna Ponnu’s scale was correct or not. I still miss Himesh, his cap and his crap ( sorry, I mean Jai Mata Di, let’s rock). Now in absence of an eminent judge like Farah Khan, who would tell Harshdeep that she lacks that X factor and good singing is not everything.

Scoring – Now this is really lame, how can you guys watch a musical without scoring? Imagine talented Archana Puran Singh scoring participants at the CokeStudio and giving 7/10 to Kailash Kher and 9/10 to Khagen Gogoi. For an average audience scores of experts like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Archana are must to judge and compare the finesse of these performers.

Drama – Simple plain signing, written introduction and then singing again – what the hell is this! Why these guys didn’t show Sabri Brothers' rags to riches story, why cameramen didn’t visit their village to show their old parents, neighbours and even family cow. How about showing Rakhi Sawant and Uday Chopra introducing Shaan? Why Tochi’s family was not in the audience with camera focusing on them every time he picks a high scale note.

Seems there’s no MBA in CokeStudio team, how can you have a reality music show with no movie stars coming and promoting their movie. SRK could have come to promote RaOne.  Tushaar, Arshad, Sharman should have been called to promote Golmaal 9, they would also have judged the show. Gifted Tushaar would have given a tip or two to Sabri Bros.

Last and the most important, NO VOTE APEEAL – now this is ridiculous. Harshdeep should have appealed for vote, especially from Punjab. I was ready with my mobile and would have spent  Rs. 7 to “save her”.  This is really bad for the economy as well.

Let’s watch the next episode coming Friday, if they don’t correct themselves even then, one of you should fast in front of CokeStudio, okay?

[Mera Sangeet Sirf Mera Hain (video)]: Tu Hi Re (Bombay)

Here's my latest instrumental played on the Keyboard – Tu Hi Re from the film Bombay. A stunning combination of A. R. Rahman as a composer, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Hariharan for the playback and Mehboob in the lyrics department, makes it a perfect song!

Hard to select one song from Rahman's box of melodies, but this always used to be at my I-so-want-to-play-it list.

I've used Flute to play the melody while Strings for accompaniment on a built-in style on my Yamaha PSR-550.

[MSSMH (video)]: Come September

Here's another of my favourite themes. Had heard this first at – believe it or not – a circus during the trapeze show! Such was the effect of the tune on me that I remember forcing Baba to teach me how to play the same (which he did :-))

The tune is from a very old English movie with the same name, and as all good tunes get lifted in apna Bollywood, this one too bore the brunt of plagiarism – a blatant copy in one of the Hindi movies :-X

I've played and recorded this theme using Trumpet as the tone and a built-in style on my YAMAHA PSR-550.

Similar to my first song, I hope you'll all like this. And nothing's a better encouragement than your comments and responses to help me in playing and uploading more of my Music.

[Mera Sangeet Sirf Mera Hain (video)]: The Sword of Tipu Sultan

Here's me replaying the first tune I'd learnt on the Keyboard. My recent visit to Tipu Sultan's Palace, the reason behind the inspiration to play it all over again!

I'd learnt to play this under the tutelage of Baba and Neha on a CASIO SA-1, which is more of a toy than a Keyboard :-D Obviously this is a much refined and polished version of what I used to play when I was 5. And just as a record, I was a complete fan of Tipu Sultan at that age, thanks to the serial which used to be aired on TV and my then visit to his Palace in Mysore :-)

The theme is completely done by me alone using Trumpet, Brass and Strings for the Tones and an in-built Style to record and play it. The Keyboard I use is a YAMAHA PSR-550.

Again my baby (after the video I'd done for my BE Computer batch of 2009) and it's the first time I'm uploading my Music in the form of a visual, hence very keen on reading and knowing your responses to the Music and the Video.

Pancham Magic

27 June: Birth Anniversary of THE BOSS! The man who gave songs to remember for a life-time; be it some pure Indian Classical composition like Raina Beeti Jaaye from Amar Prem or something involving Western arrangements like Aaja Aaja from Teesri Manzil - R. D. Burman (lovingly known as Panchamda) has left behind a treat for music aficionados like me. I'm not going to trouble myself by indulging in the impossible task of selecting five of his best compositions or five of my R. D. favourites. I'd rather complete this post and start playing some of his mesmerizing creations on the Keyboard to mark the occasion :-) I've nothing more to write than remembering him on this day. As the line in the song from the movie Jhankaar Beats goes - Zinda Hain Zinda Hain...Humare Dil Mein Boss Kaun Tha Maloom Hain Kya Boss Kaun Hain Maloom Hain Kya This day just reminds of a post I'd done some months back, click here to get yourselves refreshed.

Kande Pohe - Eaten and Sung

It happened yesterday, as it does every Thursday, that Baba took charge of the kitchen for breakfast - allowing Aai her much-deserved leave from the daily task. I allowed myself to be cajoled into 'assisting' Baba! (Yes, it surely was that once-in-a-blue-moon time) Kande Pohe was decided as the menu for the same. I was merely a 'provider' for all that Baba needed - "Rohan, kadhai de". Dili. .... "Chirlela tomato de". Dila. " .... Something that was probably missing was Baba wearing a chef's attire, the chef's topi et al (my general knowledge tells me it's called a toque B-) ). But then, while the Pohe were undergoing a transformation, I heard Baba singing a song; I almost straining my ears to get hold of the words!!! (The 'exclamation' marks are for the song he was singing rather than him singing) "Aayushya Hey Chulivarlya, Kadhaitale, Kandepohe!" Those taking efforts to listen to Marathi songs will get it. This is a song from a Marathi movie Sanai Choughade which is written and composed by none other than Awadhoot Gupte! Quite a number this. I won't get into the intricacies of the same, but without a doubt the first Marathi song with a Rock arrangement which is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. I finished the Kande Pohe (not the song :-P) with the lyrics of the song still lingering in my mind...not because I could relate to it (!) but because of the usage of some daily-used-words. Nothing jazzy about them. All-in-all a very unique song. Also, Baba couldn't have possibly found a better 'occasion' to sing the song. Hahahaha, Baba maza! :-D I'm adding the lyrics of the song for the interested - just go through them. Do let me know if you want the .mp3 of it; I'd be more than pleased to share it with you :-) * Kande Pohe (V) Bhijalelya Kshananna Aathavanichee Fodani, Haladisathee Aasurlele Halve Maan Aani Kantee Aayushya Hey Chulivarlya, Kadhaitale, Kandepohe (St) Naatyanchya Hya Bajaratun Vikretyanchi Dati, Aani Mhane To Varacha Julavi Shatjanmachya Gathee, Roj Natave Roj Sajaave Dharun Aasha Khotee, Pane Mitunee Lajalupari Punha Ughadyasathee, Aayushya Hey Chulivarlya, Kadhaitale, Kandepohe (St) Durdeshichya Rajkumarachi Swapne Pahatanna, Kunitari Yaave Haluch Magun Dhyanimani Nasatanna, Nakalat Aapan Haravoon Jave Swatas Mag Japtanna Aan Mag Dola Ughadave Diva Swapna Pahatana Aayushya Hey Chulivarlya, Kadhaitale, Kandepohe (St) Bhutakalchya Dhun Akshata Tandul Kele Jyanee, Aani Sajavala Khota Rukhawat Bhadyachya Bhandyani, Bhavishya Aata Rangavanyacha Attahasahi Tyanchas Hatavarchya Mehndivar Otun Limbache Panee Aayushya Hey Chulivarlya, Kadhaitale, Kandepohe PS: I can act as the translator if need be

Monsoon Melodies

Now that its pouring down rather incessantly for the last few days, I prefer to keep myself within the confines of the four walls...it was rather obvious, after getting drenched almost everyday and not once, but twice-thrice in a day :-( !! The monsoons have always been my favourite season (Traffic jams, water logging not withstanding)...wait, I would like to clarify - favourite just for playing and composing music — the moment I see a rain cloud my heart sings. The melodies drive away any irritation at being stuck indoors. And of course, there always is pipping hot coffee and "bhajis" + Hindi film music - there's not much else you need in life :-) Yesterday while playing, I tried to compile my favourite rain songs from Hindi films — in no particular order of preference... * Rhim Jhim Gire Saawan (Manzil) - there are two variations of this song, one by Lata Mangeshkar - featured on Amitabh Bachchan - & Moushmi Chaterjee and Mumbai in the rains. and the other by Kishore Kumar. The music is by R.D.Burman, and lyrics by Yogesh. * Aaj Rapat Jaaye (Namak Haram) - Amitabh Bachchan and Smita Patil sizzle in this rain song. Making out on a hand cart never seemed more appealing :-P. Brilliant music by Bappi Lahri and great lyrics by Anjaan. * Dil Tera Deewana Hain Sanam (Dil Tera Deewana) - Thunder, Lightening and Rain seem to be a good combination for hormones to start acting up. In this song Shammi Kapoor declares undying love for Mala Sinha. Music is by Shankar Jaikishen, Lyrics are by Shailendra. * Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si (Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi) - Kishore Kumar and Madhubala and a broken down car. The chemistry between the actors is sweet and playful. An indicator of a much more innocent era. Music by SD Burman, lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. * Ghanan Ghanan (Lagaan) - The fabulously energetic rain song with A.R.Rahman at his best. The song is relief, joy, yearning, all melded together with great melody, rythmn and a folksy quality that translates to the people’s link to rain. Lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. * Koi Ladka Hain (Dil To Paagal Hain) - The song has a great sense of innocence and reflects a great sense of the joy of life that has been rejuvenated by rains. The singers are Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan. Music is by Uttam Singh and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. SRK and Madhuri and a gaggle of kids feature in this feel good song on the rains. * Tip Tip Barsa Paani (Mohra) - the music is by Viju Shah and I somehow like Raveena Tandon's gyrating moves in this song :P * Ab Ke Saawan Main Ji Daare (Jaise Ka Taisa) - yeah, I know quite a name for a film! Actually came to know about this song thanks to the re-arranged version from the movie Dil Vil Pyaar Vyar. The original is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishor Kumar. * Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua (Shri 420) - Possibly the most iconic image that springs from Bollywood's sepia-toned past is that of Raj Kapoor and Nargis under an umbrella. Composed by Shankar-Jaikishen, this even happens to be one of the first few songs I learned on the keyboard. * Rimjhim Rimjhim (1942 A Love Story) - A very refreshing song, the music directed by none other than my favourite, Panchamda! Lyrics again by Javed Akthar. I just hope, I haven't missed any...
